Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College, Delhi University, Launches Short-Term Course on Indian Diaspora

Atul Sachdeva -New Delhi, April 9: The inauguration of a 30-hour short-term course on “Indian Diaspora: Interdisciplinary Perspectives” was held on April 9, 2025, at Pravasi Bhawan, marking a significant academic collaboration between SGTB Khalsa College, University of Delhi, Antar Rashtriya Sahyog Parishad (ARSP), and the Diaspora Research and Resource Centre (DRRC), supported by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India.

The event commenced with a warm welcome by Prof. Jasvinder Kaur Bindra (SGND Khalsa College), followed by the welcome address of Prof. Harbans Singh, Vice Principal of SGTB Khalsa College. Prof. Singh expressed heartfelt gratitude to the dignitaries, faculty members, and student volunteers, and emphasised the indelible presence of Indian values among diasporic communities across the globe. He extended special thanks to the collaborating institutions on behalf of Principal Prof. Gurmohinder Singh and Chairman, Tarlochan Singh (former MP, Rajya Sabha).

Chief Guest Dr. Sarita Boodhoo, Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awardee from Mauritius, was felicitated alongside other dignitaries, including High Commissioner of Suriname, H.E. Sunaina Mohan; Dr. Kris Rampersaud from Trinidad and Tobago; and Mr. Ashok Tiwari from Uzbekistan.

Mr. Gopal Arora from ARSP introduced the course, highlighting its multifaceted approach to diaspora studies covering themes like history, literature, cuisine, art, and Cinema. ARSP President H.E. Vinod Kumar elaborated on the economic contributions of the diaspora and commended the joint initiative.

H.E. Sunaina Mohan delightfully presented the “6Bs” of Suriname’s Indian diaspora—Bhasha, Bhesha, Bhajan, Bhojan, Bhootkal, Bhavna, and added Bollywood as a cultural glue.

Dr. Rampersaud reflected on preserving culture amidst language loss, while Prof. TejMann Singh from California, joining online, shared insights on diasporic identity crises and the cultural dichotomies faced by migrant communities. Entrepreneur Ashok Tiwari recounted his journey of overcoming initial hardships and the role of Indian festivals in fostering community ties abroad.

In an inspiring address, Dr. Boodhoo shared her journey of preserving Bhojpuri culture in Mauritius and encouraged students to pursue rigorous research in diaspora studies. The event concluded with remarks from H.E. Sushil Kumar Singhal, followed by a vote of thanks from course coordinator Ms. Gurneet Kaur, SGTB Khalsa College. The gathering ended on a convivial note with refreshments and interactive networking among participants and guests.
